Christmas murder mystery ideas for every kind of family gathering — a Victorian Christmas Eve party game, a cosy case file for two, and tips for mixed ages.

A Victorian Christmas Eve murder mystery party game

Christmas is when families actually sit at the same table for a whole evening — which makes it the perfect night for a murder mystery. It gives everyone something to do besides the usual conversations, grandparents and teenagers end up on the same team, and the story becomes a family joke for years.

The key is choosing the right format for how many of you there are and how much effort you want to put in.

Three ways to do a Christmas murder mystery

Your Christmas Best format Prep time
Christmas Eve dinner with 6–16 people A party game — everyone plays a character An hour, a week before
A quiet evening for 2–4 A case file — one puzzle, solved together Ten minutes of printing
Every day from 1 to 24 December A murder mystery advent calendar — one clue a day Print once
A ten-minute break between presents The free daily case on this site None

For a family gathering: a Victorian Christmas Eve

Our Christmas party game, Murder at Wintermere Hall, is set on Christmas Eve 1887. Snow has buried the road, the telegraph wire is down, and Sir Ambrose Wintermere — mill owner, magistrate and the meanest man in the county — has gathered his family for a goose, a grudge and his favourite ghost story. By midnight, the ghost story has come true.

For a quiet Christmas: a case file by the fire

Not every Christmas is a big one. If it's just two or three of you, a case file is a lovely ritual for Christmas Eve or the slow days after: print it, make a pot of tea, and solve it together over an evening.

Our Christmas case, The Cloakroom Killer, is set at a glittering hotel ball on Christmas Eve 1929. Eight hundred guests left their coats in the cloakroom; at 11:52 pm the lights went out for ninety seconds, and one guest never came back. You have the cloakroom ledger, twelve clues and one question: which coat belonged to the killer?

A murder mystery advent calendar

The newest way to do a Christmas mystery is to stretch it across December. A murder mystery advent calendar gives you one sealed clue for every day from 1 to 24 December; each morning you open a door, read the clue and cross out a few more suspects, and on Christmas Eve only the killer is left. It makes a lovely handmade gift too — print the little door cards, fold them, and hand over the whole stack.

24 advent doors, one clue a day

Ours, The Parcel Post Poisoner, is set in a small Vermont post office at Christmas 1952: three hundred parcels snowed in on the shelves, one of them hiding the evidence that will free an innocent woman, and twenty-four days to work out which. You can open the doors on paper or on a screen.
